Toddler Community

Stephanie Earl - Guide

Stephanie is a graduate of Georgia State University and joined the Harvest staff in 2010. She lives in Grant Park with her husband, has no pets (apart from the occasional visiting spider), and hopes to have children one day in the future. In order of enjoyment, she spends her free time playing scrabble, knitting, doing yoga, and cycling.

Karla Alas - Assistant

Karla joined Harvest in 2010 after completing her degree with University of Phoenix. Her work experience with children made it easy for her to fit right in as class assistant. She and her husband

live in Mableton, and hope to have children one day. Karla enjoys her favorite television shows and curling up with a good book.

The toddler classroom is a carefully planned environment designed to meet the needs of young children aged between 18 months and 3 years. The room will be set up to foster exploration, independence, order, and freedom of choice and movement. The room is organized and scaled down to size for the toddler’s convenience. Areas of learning are defined, yet the space is open to allow plenty of room for social interaction and activities required for growth and development.

The toddler curriculum provides for both individual and group activities. Practical Life exercises such as pouring, sweeping, washing, buttoning, zipping, and table setting are introduced early in the program in order to provide opportunities for children to care for themselves and their environment. Lessons on grace and courtesy are practiced daily to help the toddlers learn to share and to be considerate of others. Toddlers will prepare snacks for their peers and will be encouraged to demonstrate proper use of work to other classmates.

Another characteristic of the toddler class is the range of manipulative exercises, which include knobbed puzzles, bead stringing, and other basic Montessori sensorial materials. These activities are designed to heighten the child’s senses, and are unique to the Montessori environment.

We will also provide opportunities to explore music, singing, and storytelling. We will encourage a rich use of vocabulary through various materials and experiences such as language baskets and sophisticated explanations and discussions.

We believe that spending time outside is vital to the development of all children. We will spend around an hour each day exploring the out of doors and taking part in planned activities that are science and nature centered. Most of our activities offered can be done outside during our work cycle.

Bathroom independence is a large part of the program. The children must change into cloth underpants upon arrival at school. A small, child-size bathroom is available for their use.

Harvest Montessori is committed to serving fresh, organic foods for our meals and snacks in each of the programs we offer.
